Casino Bonuses

New Jersey Casino Bonuses

One of the best reasons to sign up for the various New Jersey online casinos, online poker apps, and online sportsbooks are the bonuses for which new players are eligible.

If you sign up strategically, you can enjoy hours of gambling—and even win big—using cash the NJ online gambling site gifts you in exchange for playing their games.

Casinos’ individual Terms & Conditions apply, and the online casinos don’t offer these bonuses out of the goodness of their hearts.

But if you find yourself in New Jersey and love to gamble, new-player bonuses make NY online casinos, poker houses, and sportsbooks an attractive choice to satisfy your gambling pleasure.

NJ Gambling Fun has all the best NJ online gambling bonus codes, as well as detailed instructions on how to make the most of them.

What are New Jersey Casino Bonus Codes?

Bonus codes are basically “free money” that NJ online casinos grant to new players. This free money comes in a variety of forms, with different sets of Terms & Conditions.

They could include a free credit to your account, or cash that the casino offers to match deposits you make.

Generally speaking, however, these bonuses are an incentive the online casinos offer to tempt new players to sign up.

Bonus codes may also pop up for long-standing users if online casinos are running a promotion—for example, if they want to encourage players to try a new game.

If you love to gamble, bonus codes are a great way to maximize your gameplay and potential return if you’re a new player.

Why Do NJ Online Casinos Offer Bonus Codes?

How can NJ online casinos and sportsbooks make a profit if they keep giving away free money?

Rest assured, NJ online gambling sites are in no danger of going broke because they offer bonus codes for deposit matching or free play.

Online gambling in New Jersey has generated over $1.5 billion in revenue since launching in 2013, and it’s only poised to go up from here. NJ online casinos aren’t going anywhere, anytime soon.

The money online casinos spend on bonus codes goes into their books as a marketing expense.

In fact, bonus codes are a better use of marketing and advertising dollars than a billboard or TV ad, because they don’t incur any expense until they acquire a new customer.

Even better, they don’t have to write a check! They just offer you free play.

Of course, that free play comes in the form of a credit to your new online gambling account. So, what’s to stop new players from withdrawing that bonus balance and pocketing the cash without ever playing a single hand or spin?

Terms and Conditions of the bonus are what stop it. Before you can withdraw a dime, you have to wager the amount of the bonus, often several times–sometimes as many as ten or twenty times the bonus amount–before you are eligible to withdraw against the bonus.

The NJ online casinos are banking on the notion that you’re already an enthusiastic gambler, or that you’ll become one after several thrilling rounds of play.

If and when you do become a loyal user of the NJ online gambling site, the “house edge” comes into play.

The “house edge” is the percentage of each bet that the house can expect to pocket as player losses (i.e. casino revenue). The reciprocal percentage is called the “return to player” (RTP).

Suppose an online game has an RTP of 97%, and a house edge of 3%.

That means that, the more times a user plays that game, the more likely the player is to lose 3% of that money. Of course, the player may win several hands or spins, especially early on.

Over time, however, after more and more hands, spins, or rolls of the dice, odds are the player will lose roughly 3%.

This is why gambling best practices dictate that you should “quit while you’re ahead,” not chase wins and certainly not chase losses.

Meanwhile, even if one or two players quit while they’re ahead, across all plays by all players, the online casino can expect to win 3% of the total amount wagered on that game.

This isn’t cheating, and it isn’t hush-hush. The games are designed that way. Some NJ online casinos actually post the house edge for that particular game on the gaming screen.

The final reason bonus codes are a good marketing practice for NJ online gambling sites is because they build brand loyalty that transfers to the NJ online casino’s sister brands.

For example, an enthusiastic user of the Golden Nugget Online Casino might be more likely to patronize the Golden Nugget land-based casino if the user visits Atlantic City.

Bonus Code vs. Promo Code

Should you go with a NJ online gambling site that offers a “bonus code” or a “promo code?” What’s the difference? Which is better?

The truth is, there’s no difference. The only variance is what the online casino chooses to call the bonus.

“Bonus codes” and “promo codes” operate exactly the same, within the parameters of the Terms & Conditions.

How Do New Jersey Bonus Codes Work?

A few NJ online gambling sites post sign-up bonuses automatically, but this is the exception, not the rule.

Most, however, require you to enter a special code upon sign-up to claim the bonus.

Don’t skip this step. You will be leaving hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars on the table, money you could use to extend your gambling fun.

However, you can skip that code-entry step if you sign up using one of our exclusive links. Our links are coded so that the best sign-up bonus automatically applies.

In some cases, we can offer better than the publicly available bonus! You lose nothing, and even gain, by using our sign-up links.

What Average Bonus Code Values Can You Expect?

Free-play bonuses tend to be on the small side—between $10 and $40. Nothing to write home about, but you can turn even small bonuses into big winnings if your luck is in.

Deposit-matching bonuses tend to be more substantial—$500, $1,000, or even more. However, you have to deposit your own money into the platform before the online casino will “match” your deposit with a contribution of its own.

NJ Online Casinos Bonus Terms & Conditions to be Aware of

Use of NJ online casino bonus codes are limited by their Terms & Conditions. These will vary from site to site and operator to operator, but a few common ones to look out for include:

  • Limited to new customers. Free-play, deposit match, and other types of bonuses are typically reserved for new players on that platform (players who have gambled on other websites and apps are still eligible). The site will probably confirm that you are a new player by asking for some or all of your social security number or other identifying information.
  • Validation. In addition to checking that you’re a new player, you may need to validate your email or other identifying information, and the account will have to be approved by the operator.
  • Opt-In. The opt-in is an extra step required to claim the bonus. It’s usually just a single link or a button to click, but don’t skip that step or the bonus is forfeited.
  • Playthrough requirements. A “playthrough” is the placing of one or more wagers equaling the total bonus amount. In other words, you can’t claim the bonus and then cash it out immediately. You have to “play it through,” possibly a number of times, before the bonus value is eligible for withdrawal.
  • Eligible games. Not every game may be playable with bonus chips or dollars. Some promotional bonuses are specific to a game the online casino wants to promote.
  • Time limit. You may have a certain window of time to claim your bonus after creating your account.
  • Expiration date. After you’ve claimed your bonus, you may have a certain window of time in which to use that bonus. If the expiration date elapses, the bonus is forfeited.

Online Casino Games You Can Play in New Jersey

Slots

“Slot machines” are also sometimes called “fruit machines,” “puggy,” “poker machines,” “one-armed bandits,” or “slots.”

This classic game of chance displays three or more reels bearing icons that spin along with the reels. Various alignments of icons in the reels’ final resting display entitle the player to diverse payouts … or no payout at all, depending on the lay of the reels.

Mechanical slot machines feature an arm that players pull upon depositing their bets, usually in the form of a coin or prepaid card.

The online version of the slot machine allows players to bet digital currency deposited from a bank account, credit card, or e-wallet, and press a button to spin the reels in search of that winning alignment.

The slot machine dates back to an 1891 invention featuring a drum machine displaying poker cards, with numbers and suits aligning to form winning “hands.” They proliferated in bars, with winning spins paying out free drinks or other prizes.

This evolved into automated “Liberty Bell” machines, so-named for the winning icons, released in the late 1980s and featuring the prospect of an “automatic payout” if the winning alignment of five icons was achieved.

Bally’s debuted the first fully electromechanical slot machine in 1963, with the first video slot machine later being developed in Kearny Mesa, CA, in 1976.

Modern video and virtual slot machines operate based on “pseudo-random number generators,” which constantly generate random numerical results that dictate the outcome. When the slot lever or button is activated, the most recent random number determines the outcome of the spin.

Online casino bonus codes usually apply to slot spins, with 100% of the bet contributing to the wagering requirement. Free-spin bonuses may also allow new players several free cracks at the slot machine.

Roulette

Roulette is a French word meaning “little wheel.”

A casino roulette wheel allows players to play numerous different types of bets, each of which pays out a different return based on the odds that the player will win the bet.

The dealer, also called a “croupier,” tosses a ball in the opposite direction of the spin of a wheel, containing numbers highlighted in two contrasting colors. Each number slot features a “pocket,” into which the ball could land and settle.

The outcome of the bet in question is determined by the number and color pocket into which the ball finally comes to rest.

A player can bet on a color (red or black), a single number, or a grouping of numbers (odd, even, high, low).

A color or grouping of numbers is more likely to produce a win, so the payout is small.

By contrast, betting on a single number results in a high winning payout, since the chances of the ball landing on that one number is very low.

French and European Roulette wheels feature 37 possible outcomes—1-36, plus 0.

American Roulette wheels feature 38 possible outcomes—1-36, plus 0 and 00.

An early version of roulette may have been pioneered by Blaise Pascal, the 17th-century French scientist behind Pascal’s Law, a principle of fluid dynamics critical to modern aeronautics.

The present form of the game emerged in Paris in 1796.

Bonus codes usually apply to online roulette spins, and free-spin bonuses may apply as well.

Poker

Poker is the generic name for a number of card games that share similar rules. Betting is de rigueur in a game of poker.

Poker is extremely popular in its own right, independent of other online casinos; online poker games often take place on separate sites, and poker betting is legal in many jurisdictions in which other casino games may not be.

Contrary to many other casino games, the outcome of a poker game depends not just on chance, but also on strategy and the skill of the player.

Players typically enter the game with a series of forced bets —the “ante” or “blind” bets—and then bet at will based on their confidence of their hand’s strength compared to those of other players.

Bets get placed in sequence, clockwise around the table. Players at every stage may choose to “fold,” opting out of the hand. Folding players forfeit any bets they’ve already placed, but recuse themselves from betting more money which they might lose on a weaker hand.

A “hand” is built out of five cards. Players may have the opportunity to discard several cards and trade them for better ones, or see more cards added to their hand from a community pot.

The strength of a hand depends on the sequence of the cards. “High” cards form the basis of the scoring system, with higher numerical cards beating lower cards, and the “Face” cards beating lower cards in ascending order—”Jack,” “Queen,” “King,” and “Ace.”

The four suits also establish a hierarchy, with “Spades” the highest and “Clubs” the lowest.

Different arrangements of cards reign supreme in poker, including “pairs”—same value, different suits—with “two pairs,” “three of a kind,” “four of a kind,” or a “full house” (pair plus “three of a kind”) holding extra weight.

A “straight”—four cards in sequence—has even more value, with a “straight flush” (straight all in one suit) and a “Royal flush” (a straight flush composed of all face cards) holding the most value due to its rarity.

“Bluffing” is a cherished practice within poker—intimidating other players out of a hand by betting as if you have a better hand than you do. Staying in the hand in the face of an opponent betting with confidence is called “Calling the bluff.”

In betting rounds, players can “check”—bet nothing—or “call” (match) the current best bet, or “raise” the current best bet and dare other players to match that bet, counter-raise, or fold the hand.

Poker arose in 19th-century America and has taken the world by storm as one of the most popular casino pastimes on the planet, with “professional” poker players ranked and competing in professional tournaments such as the World Series of Poker.

Bonus codes may apply to online poker games, separate codes potentially applying to separate online poker games, like World Series of Poker online.

Texas Hold’em

“Texas Hold’em” is probably the most popular poker version played in New Jersey and all over the US. A form of “community” poker, certain cards in the deal are “shared” among players, combined at will with the hidden cards dealt to them to build a winning hand.

Each player is dealt two cards, then a three card “flop” of community cards is revealed to the whole table. Two more cards are turned over, with intermittent “burn” cards to randomize the turn.

Mandatory bets come from the “little blind” and “big blind” position, rotating around the table to induce players to make minimum bets.

Players can use any combination of the two cards dealt to them and the five community cards to build a winning five-card hand.

The Texas Legislature recognizes Texas Hold‘em as having originated in Robstown, TX in the early 1900s.

Blackjack

Blackjack, also known as “Twenty-One,” is a compounding card game where each player competes against the dealer, not against each other.

Cards count as their face value, or ten for “face” cards, with aces worth one or eleven depending on the advantage of each value.

Both the player and the dealer attempt to get as close as possible to the winning total-hand value of twenty-one.

A request for another card is called a “hit.” The dealer must usually hit until (s)he shows 17 points or more. The player can hit at his/her discretion.

If either the player or the dealer hits cards exceeding twenty-one points, he/she “busts” and loses the hand. If the dealer does not bust but the player shows more points than the dealer without busting, the player wins the hand.

Twenty-One was mentioned in the writings of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, and was being played in Spain at least as early as 1602.

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games in the world, and many bonus codes apply to blackjack, with bets contributing to the wagering requirement.

Many strategists attempt to use mathematics and probability to devise a strategy that “beats” the game of blackjack, turning the edge from the house to the player for predictable wins.

Bingo

Bingo has the distinction of being legal in many jurisdictions outside of New Jersey, whereas other casino games are not.

A bingo game progresses as the officiant calls out randomly drawn numbers, and the players mark those numbers on their bingo card as they appear.

If a player achieves a determined outcome on their card, they win the prize for that round and the round is over.

Bonus codes may apply to Bingo games, which may contribute toward clearing wagering requirements.

Baccarat

Baccarat is a card game played between a player and a “banker” (dealer). Hands are counted based on the “unit digits” of the resulting cards. Each hand of Baccarat is called a “coup.”

For example, a hand showing a 2 and a 3 would be worth 5, but a hand showing a 6 and a 7 would be worth 3 (6 + 7 = 13, and “3” is the “unit” or one’s-place digit in 13).

A hand can have one of three outcomes—Player, Dealer, or Tie. Ties have large payouts, and some of the highest house edges in any casino, pushing 14-15%.

By contrast, player house edges tend to be some of the lowest in the casino, close to 1%.

The three most popular forms of baccarat include:

– Punto Banco

Most casino baccarat games are “Punto Banco,” where the casino plays both hands at all times according to fixed drawing rules called the “tableau.”

Players can bet on either outcome of the hand. There is no particular association of the bettor or the house with either the player or banker position.

Chemin de Fer

Chemin de Fer is French for “railroad.” This version of Baccarat is still the most popular version in France—and the favorite casino game of James Bond.

Players rotate the role of banker. If wagers from players do not exceed the bank, bystanders may place wagers on the outcome, even if they are not playing the coup.

– Baccarat Banque

In Baccarat Banque, a player holds the position of banker until (s)he retires willingly or runs out of funds. Usually the initial banker is decided by auction, meaning it falls to the player willing to risk the most money.

Progressive Jackpot Games

A “progressive jackpot” describes a type of game where the potential winnings increase with each play.

The game in question could be slots, poker, or another game. Many lotteries are progressive jackpots, with the potential winnings increasing after every unclaimed prize.

Multiple games or machines may be tied together to feed into the jackpot.

If a game with a house edge of 5% feeds into a progressive jackpot, 1% of that edge may go into the jackpot fund.

Payouts from one win on a progressive jackpot can be enormous. Bonus codes usually apply to them, and they contribute to wagering requirements.

Live Dealer Games

Certain NJ online casinos offer the opportunity to play games not against “random number generating” software, as is the basis of most online games of chance.

Instead, the player gets to play against a live dealer, turning cards or spinning the wheel in real life from a studio on the payroll of the casino.

The following NJ online casinos offer certain games on a live-dealer basis:

Note that demo or free-play versions of live dealer games cannot be claimed. Only cash bets can be placed with live dealer bets, on games of chance such as:

  • Baccarat
  • Blackjack
  • Hold’em Poker
  • Roulette
  • Three-Card Poker.

Live-dealer games on NJ online casinos may have different Terms & Conditions than the other games in the casino. Make sure to read them.

The free/demo version of the same game is a great way to cut your teeth and learn the ropes of the game before betting real money with a live dealer.

Live dealer games tend to have a higher “house edge” than their random-number-generator (RNG) versions.

They may also have more restricted hours of operation than the automated, online versions of the game. However, gambling enthusiasts should be able to find live dealer games on the sites that offer them, many during attractive gameplay hours.

Will You Find the Same Bonus Types at All Casinos?

Not necessarily. Free-play and deposit-matching bonuses are common across most NJ online casinos, but each casino has the right to set its own bonus amounts and offer any type of bonus it likes.

Some online casinos offer unique or exclusive bonuses you won’t find at other NJ online casinos. For example, the Tropicana and Virgin online gambling sites offer cash-refund bonuses, while competitor sites currently do not.

NJ online casino bonus codes and promo codes will be the same on all versions of that online casino brand.

For example, the Golden Nugget Online Casino available through your desktop web browser will offer the same bonus codes and values as the Golden Nugget Online Casino mobile app. If you claim a bonus on one, it will also be accessible on the other.

Standard Wagering Requirements for NJ Online Casino Bonuses

While they may seem like “free money,” NJ online casino bonuses do come with strings attached in the form of “wagering requirements.”

Wagering requirements stipulate that a player must bet the bonus amount a certain number of times before it can be withdrawn as cash.

Suppose a player receives a $20 free-play bonus that comes with a 10x wagering requirement.

The player would be required to bet $200 (10 x $20) before (s)he can withdraw that initial $20 or associated winnings.

Because of the house edge, players are more likely to fall behind the more they bet, so wagering requirements help ensure that the casino makes money in the long run, even by giving away “free money” or free plays.

Wagering requirements may apply to both no-deposit bonuses and deposit-match bonuses.

Some games are better than others when it comes to clearing the wagering requirement. Things to be on the lookout for include:

Eligibility

While most wagering requirements can be cleared on any game within the platform, some NJ online casinos limit wagering requirement clearance to certain games.

For example, the Borgata online casino only allows wagering requirements to be cleared on slots. Low-risk roulette wagers may also be ineligible at many NJ online casinos.

Contribution

Some games “contribute” more to the wagering requirement than others.

An instruction on the game indicating that it “contributes 100% to the wagering requirement” means that for every $1 you bet on that game, your wagering requirement is reduced by $1.

If, however, the contribution is only 20%, every dollar bet on that game will only contribute $0.20 to reducing the wagering requirement.

Higher contributions typically come from games with a high house edge and a low RTP … meaning the casinos clear your wagering requirement more quickly when you play games where the house is more likely to net a lot of revenue.

Advantageous Wagering Requirements

Certain wagering requirements make it likely that you’ll come out ahead in the process of clearing the requirement.

Be on the lookout for these opportunities in the mathematics of the house edge vs. the wagering requirement.

For example, see if you can find a 10x wagering requirement on slots. NJ online casino slots pay out at about 95% RTP, meaning you need to bet $1,000 to clear a bonus of $100.

Because of the house edge of 5%, you are likely to lose $50 of that $1,000 … but you will have unlocked a $100 bonus that you can now withdraw, placing you $50 ahead!

A 20x wagering requirement on slots would be about breakeven. Anything below 20x on slots and you are likely to come out ahead in the process of clearing the wagering requirement.

For online poker, a 25x wagering requirement is usually breakeven, because the house has an edge of 4%. Anything below 25x on poker and you are likely to come out ahead.

Available Bonus Types

NJ online casino bonus codes and promo codes come in a variety of different flavors. Here are some of the different bonuses to look for:

No-Deposit Bonuses

These are also known as “free-play bonuses.” The online casino gives you a certain amount of money for free.

As the name implies, you don’t have to deposit a dime into your online casino account to qualify for this bonus. As long as you’re a new player and follow the Terms & Conditions, no other strings are attached.

Just create your account with the bonus code, opt in, and the cash is there for you to use.

The dollar value of free-play bonuses tends to be small—$10, $20, maybe $40. However, it’s better than nothing, and if you win big, it’s well worth it!

No-deposit bonuses also give you the opportunity to learn the platform and experiment with different games. Once you are acclimated, you can bet the bonus value or more with confidence.

Free-Spins Bonuses

Rather than funding your online betting account, a “free-spins bonus” entitles you to play several rounds of a game for free. The free spins may be tied to slots, roulette, or other table games.

A deposit may or may not be required.

Free-spins bonuses are valuable because some of the games pay out big-time. You have a chance at a huge payday while risking little or no money.

Welcome Bonuses

A welcome bonus is a catch-all category for bonuses offered to new players. Players must be verified as new with an identity and background check, sometimes requiring a social security number.

Welcome bonuses could be free-play bonuses, deposit-matching bonuses, or some other form of bonus.

Match Bonuses

Match bonuses can be quite lucrative, but they do require you to deposit money into your cash account with the NJ online gambling site.

Once you have claimed this kind of bonus and deposited funds, the online casino will match those funds at a certain percentage (often 100%) up to a certain dollar value.

For example, if an online casino offers a 100% matching bonus on deposits up to $1,000, you can deposit $1,000 into your account during the bonus period, and the casino will deposit its own $1,000 into that account, leaving you with a balance of $2,000 to wager!

Reload Bonuses

Reload bonuses target longtime, loyal players instead of new players.

A NJ online casino might offer a reload bonus to a longstanding user at any time. These are typically matching bonuses, encouraging the player to deposit more funds (which the casino will match) and keep playing.

The casino will typically send the targeted player a promo code to enter when depositing new funds.

VIP Casino Bonuses

Another perk for longtime players, VIP casino bonuses target elite players, who use the site frequently and bet big.

Like getting a room comped after placing a lot of bets at a land-based casino, a VIP bonus offers extra perks and services to loyal users. These bonuses might be tied to the earning of loyalty points, such as Caesar’s Rewards.

VIP bonuses might include:

  • Gifts
  • Discounted hotel rooms
  • Event tickets
  • Cash in the user’s account
  • Free spins, plays, hands, or rounds.

Cash Refunds

Tropicana and Virgin have led the way with an innovative bonus on their online gambling platforms.

Cash refund bonuses allow players to recoup losses. After making a qualifying deposit of at least $10, new players may be eligible for a refund of losses up to $100.

It may seem too good to be true—you get your losses back, but you also get to keep your winnings. Again, the casinos are betting that you’ll become a loyal, repeat customer as you become accustomed to their online gambling platform.

Indeed, a cash-refund bonus is an excellent way to learn the ropes of NJ online gambling with little or nothing at risk and everything to gain.

Refer-a-Friend Bonuses

If a friend, colleague, or relative signs up for a New Jersey online casino and enters your username as the person who referred them when they register, the casino will typically give you a small bonus as a “thank you” for bringing them new players.

The new player typically has to make a qualifying deposit for you to get the bonus—usually $10 or so deposited into your betting account.

However, the new player should be eligible for bonus codes and promo codes in his/her own right.
How to Detect Online Casinos Operating Legally in New Jersey

Online casinos became legal in New Jersey on February 27, 2013 when Governor Chris Christie signed online gambling authorization into state law.

These gaming websites and apps must operate under the license of an authorized Atlantic City casino, run off servers housed on the premises of an authorized Atlantic City casino.

Players must also be located within the state of New Jersey to play, although they can deposit or withdraw funds from anywhere in the world. The location of the player is determined by GPS tracking.

On November 21 of that same year, the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) authorized the first online casinos and poker sites, operating under the license of Atlantic City casinos.

Players need to be aware of the existence of unauthorized online gambling sites operating illegally under the guise of an authorized NJ online gambling site.

These sites may fudge the truth or lie outright about their authorization to offer online gambling services in New Jersey.

They may claim to be authorized under different licensing authorities, but only the DGE can authorize NJ online casinos. Many illegal online casinos are based offshore, operating in NJ under false pretenses.

However, it is only legal to gamble in New Jersey on websites and apps authorized by the DGE and operating under the license of an Atlantic City casino, off of servers housed on the property of an authorized Atlantic City casino.

What are the Differences between Legal and Illegal NJ Online Casinos?

Legal casinos pay taxes to the state of New Jersey and submit to state monitoring and regulations. Illegal online casinos do not.

If you wind up creating an account, funding it, and placing bets on an illegal NJ online casino, you face the following risks:

Loss of Funds

Without oversight by the DGE, there is no telling whether your funds on deposit are safe or not.

Funds may not be held in secure accounts. Withdrawals may be delayed or declined. There may be no telling what account holds the funds.

Any funds on deposit with an illegal online casino are at risk of total loss.

Identity Theft

The DGE imposes strict controls on NJ online casinos’ handling of their customers’ sensitive data, like social security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, bank account, and payment card information.

Without state oversight, any information entered into an illegal online casino may be subject to theft, misuse, breach, or sale to other criminal actors.

Creating an account at an illegal online casino places users at risk of identity theft, credit card fraud, and other data crimes.

Unfair Gaming Practices

While all casino games favor the house, the DGE strictly monitors NJ online casinos for abuse. They enforce fair play and penalize casinos that implement “rigged” outcomes, where the player has no chance to win.

An illegal online casino, by contrast, may offer rigged or unfair games where the player is effectively guaranteed to lose.

Even if the player hits a jackpot on an illegal site, the illegal casino might cite its Terms & Conditions or just outright refuse to pay the winnings to the player.

The DGE ensures authorized NJ online casinos pay out on players’ winnings.

How Does NJ Regulate Online Gambling?

The NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) is responsible for the oversight of the multibillion-dollar New Jersey gambling industry, including:

  • Authorized racetracks
  • Land-based Atlantic City casinos
  • Online casinos, poker games, and sportsbooks.

The DGE offers two different licenses to online casinos:

  • Internet Gaming Permit (IGP). A license issued to land-based Atlantic City casinos, granting them full authorization to operate an online casino, poker game, or sportsbook.
  • Casino Service Industry Enterprise License (CSIE). This lesser license authorizes a company to provide platform and online gaming services as a third-party vendor to a licensed Atlantic City casino.

Typically, a land-based casino applies for an IGP. Once licensed, they can then develop their platform and online games in-house, or subcontract the development to a CSIE-licensed web developer.

What Rules Apply to Online Casinos?

Online casinos are governed by New Jersey state law. All applicable regulations can be found here.

Some regulations apply specifically to online gambling. Unless otherwise specified, all laws that apply to land-based casinos also apply to online casinos.

What Should I Do if I Have a Dispute with a Licensed Online Casino?

A formal complaint against an authorized casino can be lodged with the DGE here.

Do Any Rules or Controls Address “Problem Gambling?”

Certain online casinos limit deposits and put other controls in place to limit any one user’s gambling activity.

Players can also select a “self-exclusion” option to block their own access to NJ online gambling sites.
