The Case for a Standalone DraftKings Casino App

At first, online sportsbooks like DraftKings, FanDuel, and William Hill had very little interest in offering casino games along with their sports betting apps. But as iGaming is legalized across the country, the sportsbooks saw a way to capitalize on the highly lucrative market.

DraftKings was the first sports betting company to offer a casino app in New Jersey featuring best-in-class Blackjack with a modern, custom-branded live studio. The DraftKings casino app next launched in Pennsylvania. Soon after, the FanDuel Casino app made its debut.

However, while there is some cross-over between sports bettors and casino players, casino enthusiasts are a slightly older demographic. Also, women are more likely to play online slots. That is why DraftKings decided to create a standalone casino app. But the casino games are still available on the sportsbook app, for sports bettors who like both.

This allows sports bettors to enjoy the casino offerings, while entertaining traditional casino players with a dedicated casino product.

The cancellation of major league sports due to the COVID-19 shutdown was also a wake-up call to diversify. Both DraftKings and FanDuel shifted focus to their online casinos in Pennsylvania.

Online Casino Market Growing Fast for DraftKings

Earlier this year, DraftKings went public and watched its stock explode by nearly 400%. In recent days DraftKings stock finally settled at a roughly 250% gain. All of this happened during the shutdown, when there were no major league sports. It goes without saying, this caught the eye of investors all over the world.

One reason for DraftKings’ success is the company’s creative sports offerings during that “unprecedented time.” Online sportsbooks offered odds on everything from Belarusian table tennis to hot dog eating contests.

But another reason is that DraftKings, along with rival FanDuel, began to offer online casino games on their sportsbook apps. This opens up an entirely new window of opportunity for DraftKings beyond the young male, sports betting demographic.

Eventually, DraftKings made the decision to separate its casino audience from its sports bettors with a dedicated casino app. Separating the sportsbook and casino games will make it easier for customers to find what they’re looking for while reducing the bloat in the app. But longtime DraftKings fans needn’t worry, they can still share their wallet between all of DraftKings’ various gambling apps.

Following in the footsteps of neighboring New Jersey, Pennsylvania became the second state to legalize online casino gambling, making the Keystone State a prime target for gaming operators. It’s no wonder why DraftKings has chosen both Pennsylvania and New Jersey to launch its new casino app.
